What is external shutdown for wind farms?

Wherever wind turbines are in operation, care must be taken—for people, animals, and airspace. External shutdown is a key component of safe and environmentally responsible wind farm control. It ensures that wind turbines are stopped automatically or manually during certain events, such as helicopter flights or agricultural work.

For example, during mowing operations: when farmers mow their fields, the wind farm must respond. Small animals are startled, and insects fly about. This attracts birds of prey searching for food. It is precisely at these moments that the risk of birds colliding with the wind turbines increases. in Germany, Section 45b of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) requires wind farm operators to minimize this risk through a system known as “mowing shutdown.”

The German Armed Forces are also authorized to stop wind farms or individual turbines via remote control. This is necessary, for example, when aircraft are flying in adjacent airspace or when radar systems are being interfered with. The same applies to helicopter flights, takeoffs, and landings at low altitudes in and around the wind farm.

Additionally, consideration must be given to residents if they are affected by shadow flicker or noise pollution. In these cases, the turbines can be automatically or remotely shut down during specific time periods.

With Light:Guard Shutdown Control, you can implement these requirements intelligently, flexibly, and transparently. The system responds to external signals via sensor or app and converts them into clear control commands. This ensures your turbines are shut down promptly and precisely as soon as external conditions require it—completely automatically and with a log.

Customized control of your turbines: applications of the Light:Guard Shutdown Control

Harvest Control

During mowing, the system selectively shuts down wind turbines to protect people, animals, and vehicles in the work area. The shutdown can be initiated manually via an app or automatically based on defined zones or sensor data.

Military Control

The system automatically responds to signals from the Armed Forces and shuts down affected wind turbines for the duration of the operation. This ensures that the radars are not interfered with and that flight safety is maintained.

Aviation Control

When rescue or transport helicopters approach at low altitude, affected systems are automatically shut down. This ensures that pilots, emergency responders, and infrastructure remain optimally protected at all times.

Resident Control

Residents can shut down the wind turbine if they are affected by shadow flicker or noise. This increases acceptance in the region and improves the quality of life for those living near the wind farm.

How the Shutdown Control works

Your advantages with the Light:Guard Shutdown Control

Simply send us an inquiry using the contact form and we will get back to you as soon as possible. You will receive a non-binding quote within 48 hours – transparent and with no hidden costs.

This quote clearly breaks down all items: from one-time costs for installation and approval to annual fees for signal provision and maintenance.

360-degree comprehensive support throughout the entire term of your contract—and even before that. You will have a dedicated Light:Guard contact at all times:

  • in sales until the contract is signed
  • in project management during project implementation with approval and installation
  • in technical support after your wind farm goes into operation.

This way, both you and we benefit from a smooth and efficient process.

With an online monitoring tool, you can keep an eye on your wind farm in real time. You can call up automated reports on the activity of the light:guard system at any time for any time period. These reports show you how much nighttime lighting has been reduced, how often the lights were on, and why. Automatic error notifications ensure that you can react immediately before failures occur.

You don’t have to worry about complying with legal requirements at your wind farm—we’ll take care of that for you. Upon request, you can receive not only Shutdown Control but also the light:guard Aircraft Detection Lighting System (ADLS). This allows you to benefit from discounted prices by combining both systems.
